Metaphysical Musicianship Level II Laboratory

Bookmark and Share

This class builds upon the skills developed in Metaphysics of Musicianship Level One in order to develop greater facility and accuracy. The first goal of our continued work is to move these skills into long-term muscle memory so they are available to the musician in public performances. Skill and facility enable us to learn scores quickly and accurately, reducing the time it takes to prepare a piece for performance.

The primary goal of musicianship, however, is the development of artistry. We begin to address the subject of the emotional language of music, what constitutes expression, and how musicians use musical materials to affect emotional response. We explore how to use the tools we have learned to create something beautiful for the listener.

Topics addressed in this 14 week course include:

  • Accurately and quickly recognizing intervals in score or by ear, either played sequentially or simultaneously
  • Understanding modes and playing them on the keyboard
  • Singing or playing the diatonic scales on the keyboard with proper fingering
  • Memorizing all key signatures, including which notes are flatted or sharped
  • Maintaining a steady pulse throughout a piece
  • Accurately counting and sub-dividing pulses in all major time signatures
  • Music Theory’s roots in the physics of sound
  • Metaphysical philosophical discussions of music as vibratory energy
  • What constitutes beauty of tone, and how timbre can be used to affect mood
  • How dynamics affect the shape of a phrase, and how it can be used to engage the listener in the music
  • How the five elements of music work together to create musical form
  • How the five elements of music contribute to a universal language of musical expression
  • How form affects our perception of music and our emotional state

Throughout, we utilize the four modalities of singing, playing, analyzing, and composing to master concepts experientially. Metaphysics of Musicianship Level Two can be repeated as often as the student finds it beneficial.
