Metaphysical Musicianship Level I

This class develops skill and confidence in learning, writing, practicing, and performing scores as well as how to use the craft of music to move listeners emotionally and spiritually. We cover basic music reading, musicianship skills, and music theory, integrated with music’s metaphysical aspects that contribute to the mystery of its beauty and power to move us.

Beginning at ground zero, we systematically build both the knowledge and associated skills of music’s structure, and the materials that define those structures. Topics include:

• The five organizing aspects of music (pitch, rhythm, dynamics, timbre, and form)
• The dynamic symbols of music used to represent those five aspects within a score
• How pitches combine to create melodies, intervals, scales, and chords
• How scales are identified using key signatures
• How one can use scales and key signatures to transpose pieces into different keys
• How time is measured with steady pulse, tempo and sub-divisions of the pulse
• How time is organized in hierarchies of pulse using time signatures, and how those hierarchies contribute to the language of emotional expression in music

Students are guided in exploring each concept by playing at the keyboard, through sight singing, by analyzing in a score, and by composing. Exploring each concept through these four learning modalities (playing, singing, analyzing, composing) ensure that the material is learned in the fastest and easiest manner possible, as well as keeping it fun!

The class meets in the Institute’s new keyboard lab, which contains electronic keyboard workstations and headphones, accessible to and from the Instructor’s keyboard workstation. This state-of-the-art keyboard lab contributes to the group learning experience, and teaches students how to utilize a keyboard as a tool to learn their scores quickly and accurately.

The course is appropriate for anyone who has never learned to read music but has played or sung by ear who has tried to learn to read music but found it difficult and gave up, or who found learning it so boring that they fell asleep! This is a 14 week consciousness-raising class in which we explore music’s depth and power to transform and heal, and literally rewires the brain!

May 6, from 6-9pm or specify on the registration form that they wish to have a link with the video emailed to them.

Summer 2012 Semester starts Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

Tuition for 14 and 8 Week Summer Classes:
$40 per week for one class($560 total for 14 weeks or $320 total for 8 weeks)
$75 per week for two classes ($1050 total for 14 weeks or $600 total for 8 weeks)
$110 per week for three classes ($1540 total for 14 weeks or $880 total for 8 weeks)

NOTE: Continuing students must register before date TBA shortly to avoid a $75 late fee. A deposit (payment for the first three classes) is required immediately with registration to reserve your spot in the class(es). Payment plans for remaining tuition will be emailed to you and must be in place prior to the first day of classes on Tues., May 1st, 2012. Failure to set up your payment plan prior to the first day of classes will result in forfeiture of your spot in the class.
